Do you need to remove wood trim before installing tile or hardwood floors?

I'm planning on pulling up my carpet and either replacing it with tile or hardwood floors. I'm wondering if I will need to remove the wood trim that runs along the bottom of the walls right above the floor, or if there will be enough room to install the flooring without removing them.

i am a general contractor. i do lots of wood flooring. i always remove the baseboards and either replace the old one (not often) or put new ones. it isn't necessary to replace them. you can ad another piece to the existing base called a shoe (usually a piece of quarter round). this method is best if the walls are old lath and plaster or if the existing base is very large. if you do remove them be sure to cut the caulking that is almost always on the top, away from the wall first or you will have to repaint your walls. also be sure to cut off the bottom of any door jambs and casing so the new floor can slip underneath.

the whole point of baseboards is to hide the space between the floor & the wall so it is best to remove them

  4. If you are fitting a hardwood floor you should always allow an expansion gap around the floor. This is essential to allow the floor naturally expand and contract with different humidity etc. This gap should be hidden with a skirting or trim

You don’t need to, but if you want to make it look professional you should – removing the trim isn’t that much more work.

When you are done placing the carpet with tile/hardwood, I would upgrade the trim or at least paint it.
